The first batch of phone delivery will be provided between September 1-4. However, it remains unclear if the Jio Phone will be handed out to Jio employees and their families for testing or to regular customers on a first-come-first serve basis.

As India celebrates its 71st Independence Day today, beta-testing of the much-awaited 4G-enabled zero-cost Reliance JioPhone has commenced. You will be asked to fill in some details such as your first name, last name, address, phone number and pin code.

A similar page on the Jio website is also there for businesses looking to purchase the phone in bulk, where they will have to provide the GSTN or PAN details, to avoid fake registrations, name of the company and e-mail address. To pre-book JioPhone online, visit and click on the Jio phone banner where the "Keep Me Posted" button is located.

Reliance Jio, along side the launch of JioPhone, also unveiled a couple of data plans for the devices.

JioPhone has several feature that have not been commonly seen on feature phones, such as 4G VoLTE Internet, compatibility with multimedia apps, and option to mirror content to television sets via a proprietary cable. Ambani, who had taken the telecom sector by surprise with free voice calls and data a year ago, announced the next leap at the company's 40th shareholder meeting. Reports suggest that some retailers have already started taking the pre-orders for Jio Phone, which will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

Buyers will have to pay the Rs 1,500 refundable security deposit for JioPhone once they pick up the device and not at the time of registration. The widely anticipated JioPhone is a 4G feature that comes with an "effective zero price".

To top it all, the company has also announced plans to incorporate NFC technology into the phone later this year.

Talking about Jio Phone features, the device comes with an alphanumeric keypad, 2.4-inch display with QVGA display, microSD card slot, torchlight, FM radio. The phone supports voice commands and 22 Indian languages, and has a panic button as well.

Further, Voice will be free for life-time on JioPhone; however, customers will have to pay Rs 153 per month to access data (0.5 GB per day) services and various other entertainment content.

The company is also offering a few modified unlimited data plans with the JioPhone.
