What is the reach of North Korea's missiles?

North Korea is barred under United Nations resolutions from any use of ballistic missile technology but six sets of United Nations sanctions since Pyongyang's first nuclear test in 2006 have failed to halt its drive for what it insists are defensive weapons.

Armed with extraordinary new U.N. sanctions, nations are racing to ensure that North Korea's biggest trading partners actually carry them out. He says the North is "ready to teach the US a severe lesson with its nuclear strategic force".

Both sanctions against North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes and resumption of the six-party talks are important and neither should be neglected, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

"We will make the USA pay by a thousand-fold for all the heinous crimes it commits against the state and people of this country", the statement said.

"Should the United States pounce on the DPRK with military force at last, the DPRK is ready to teach the U.S. a severe lesson with its nuclear strategic force it has so far shown in detail", the North Korean foreign minister added.

But he also said it was not as simple as North Korea stopping launches for a few days or weeks.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2371, tightening sanctions against North Korea.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the chairman of a Manila ministerial meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum showed "grave concern" over recent developments related to North Korea, including its firing of intercontinental ballistic missiles last month. In particular, the restrictions target imports of coal, iron ore, lead and seafood imports from the Asian nation to UN member states. As an achievement from the forum, Kang said Seoul had "received very active support and a positive response in its bilateral and multilateral meetings on its efforts to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula as expressed in the Berlin vision". He says the only way that would change is if another country joined in an American action against North Korea.

The United States says it will be watching China closely to ensure it fully and continuously implements new U.N. sanctions on North Korea.

But ASEAN's statement on North Korea stopped short of endorsing calls that Pyongyang be suspended from the ARF, as officials at the U.S. State Department had suggested this past week. Foreign Minister Wang Yi unleashed harsh words on sensitive topics against South and North Korea, the U.S., and Japan.

Wang said the two had an intensive conversation during which China urged North Korea to maintain calm.

"Do not violate the U.N.'s decision or provoke worldwide society's goodwill by conducting missile launching or nuclear tests", Wang said he told North Korea's Ri. Those tests sharply escalated USA fears that Pyongyang is a key step closer to mastering the technology needed to strike American soil with a nuclear-tipped missile.
