Wenger Hails Giroud's Impact, Arsenal Character In Comeback Win Vs Leicester

"This has happened to us the last three seasons here", he told Sky Sports.

"I opened the door for him at some stage as I had many strikers and it's important for him to play but I don't want him to go", he said.

Wenger insisted matches like this incredible curtain raiser are what helps the top level of English to be the world's most entertaining league - but it was Giroud that he saved his most fulsome praise for.

Giroud appears willing - if a little reluctantly - to accept his role as an understudy to Lacazette.

Shinji Okazaki cancelled out Lacazette's opener with a close-range header after Maguire had been left unmarked to nod Marc Albrighton's deep cross back across goal.

After nearly 30 minutes being a goal down, the Gunners look destined for an opening day defeat but their so often hero, Aaron Ramsey, who came on a second half substitute, drilled the ball past the goalkeeper after showing some excellent control.

Both Ramsey and Giroud played big parts in the win for Arsenal, as both ended up on the scoresheet.

The game seemed to be playing out to a rather boring finish with Arsenal not being able to create any chances and the Foxes happy to sit back on their lead.

"It is a relief and I believe as well a reminder to the players that they have hurdles on the way and that we can get round it, like tonight so that is quite positive".

"I felt that to lose tonight would have been awful for us because we had such good preparation and to sit there in the morning and think we had lost at home would have been bad", he said.

"He came out and made a statement which we are all aware of but while he trains and plays and is professional the way he is, he will be considered for selection". He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy he wants to stay.

I'm not saying he should be Arsenal's number one striker; that wouldn't be enough if Arsenal were trying to win a Premier League or Champions League which a club of this size should be.

"This has happened to us the last three seasons here".

"And you could see that this team has quality and is used to playing together, but [we had] 70 per cent possession with 27 shots on goal".
