Troops board a plane at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, on April 7, 2016, on their way to participate in Operation Inherent Resolve.

Two American service members died in Iraq early Sunday in what authorities described as an incident not related to enemy combat, ABC News reported.

"Initial reports indicate the incident was not due to enemy contact", the statement continued, adding the circumstances are "under investigation". Two more US servicemembers have died in support of the operation. It did not identify the soldiers.

The slain troops were part of the so-called US-led coalition, which was formed in 2014, with a purported aim of fighting the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group in Iraq but it was later expanded to include territories in eastern and northern Syria.

"The entire counter-ISIS coalition sends our deepest condolences to these heroes' families, friends and teammates", Townsend said in a statement. The troops are mainly providing training and logistic support to the Iraqi forces, in addition to airstrikes by a USA -led global coalition.

The latest deaths bring to nine the number of Americans killed supporting Operation Inherent Resolve this year, including noncombat deaths.
