Los Angeles police were conducting an investigation in the area when the riot started around 10 p.m. Officers who encountered the large, unruly crowd in the area called for backup from both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "We're looking at all options to resolve this matter". The officers then tried to disperse the crowd, and the disturbance escalated.

Police on patrol observed a crowd drinking, smoking pot, blasting music and blocking streets at the Nickerson Gardens project in Watts, Preciado said.

Officers also arrested Stanley Walton, 43, on suspicion of carrying a gun as an ex-convict.

Officers called for backup when the crowd grew and people began throwing bottles.

The arrest was part of a disturbance that resulted in damage to five Los Angeles Police Department vehicles and one sheriff's vehicle, according to ABC-7 in Los Angeles.

Randolph, a 16-year National Basketball Association veteran, spent eight seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies before signing with the Sacramento Kings in July. No officers were hurt.

Randolph, a two-time All Star who joined the Kings on a two-year US$24 million (S$32 million) contract earlier this summer from the Memphis Grizzlies, was detained along with another man.

In the end, cops recovered 2 guns, drugs, a significant amount of cash and 2 vehicles were impounded - though it's unclear if any of those things belonged to Randolph. "We have no further comment at this time". Randolph also played for the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.
