Todd Bowles clearly trying to take the heat off Hackenberg

"I'm not basing this game exclusively on Christian's star debut as a movie theater actor", Bowles said.

Bowles said he doesn't know which quarterback will start yet, but he noted that Hackenberg, Josh McCown and Bryce Petty all will play.

All three quarterbacks will play, he said. Hackenberg checked in after one series, and played deep into the second half.

"[It's] concentration, trying too hard", Bowles said. Between that offseason decision and making better in-game decisions (don " t have to "run through people" on every play, sometimes a quick cut is better), he hopes it will keep him fresh and on the field all season. He's going to get a lot of reps. "Whether he plays good or bad doesn't determine his reps for the next week or after that". Because there were times past year where he just didn't feel good, "bloated" even. "He barely played. He barely played this year".

Bowles said nobody should interpret Saturday's starter as the leader in this three-man competition, even though it appears McCown now leads, and Petty is a distant third.

Bowles said they're "all pretty even" through two weeks of training camp. He'll be on the spot Saturday night against the Tennessee Titans. Bowles also said nothing should be interpreted by who is named Saturday's starter.
