Terrorists, 2 Army Personnel Killed In Encounter In Jammu And Kashmir's Shopian

Director General of J&K Police, S P Vaid, said three militants were killed in the encounter, "Today morning 3 Terrorists Eliminated at Zainpora Shopian".

Two Army personnel were killed and three others, including an officer, were injured during the initial phase of the gunfight late on Saturday night.

The area has been cordoned, as around three terrorists are believed to be holed up and attempts are being made to smoke them out.

On Wednesday, three terrorists have been killed in an encounter at Tral in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

Itoo, often called a "vintage terrorist" as he joined Hizbul Mujahideen in 1996, had surrendered in 2007 and later released on parole in 2014.

The police said there was information about presence of the militants in the area and the cordon was laid.

He said militants lobbed hand grenades and fired automatic rifles from two civilian homes and an apple orchard, killing two soldiers.

The injured soldiers are being treated at the army's base hospital in Badami Bagh area of Srinagar. Itoo was held responsible for instigating the violence in the Valley after the killing of militant Burhan Wani a year ago.

Residents said that locals rushed out of their homes to protest and pelt stones on the forces as soon as firing started.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the youth were martyred by the troops during a siege and search operation in Awneera area of the district. Many among the injured have suffered bullet and pellet injuries, doctors said, but their condition is stable.
