Sonia calls opposition meeting on Friday, Sharad invited

16 out of 18 parties, which were invited, attended the meeting.

Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the meeting, as did CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.

Speaking on the agrarian crisis in the country, he said that the Congress, unlike the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has always worked to waive off the loans for the farmers.

The NCP's staying away from the meeting comes after two of its MLAs in Gujarat are believed to have voted for BJP in the Rajya Sabha election on Tuesday. We are not in alliance with the Congress anywhere, still we supported them in Gujarat, but their spokesperson in Gujarat kept blaming us.

When asked about the absence of NCP at the meeting, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters he had personally spoken to Pawar, who in turn informed him that he was unwell and was therefore skipping the meeting.

On Wednesday NCP told Congress that the grand old party must remember this that Congress succeed only because of they helped them, They should not forget this in the future. The meeting would deliberate on these matters, he said. "We raised all issues pertaining to farmers, unemployment, atrocities on Dalits and minorities", he said. He indicated that a small group of opposition leaders might be formed to carry forward the consultation process. Speaking about Yadav and his disagreements over Kumar's decision to join the NDA, Kumar, who was in New Delhi on Friday, said that the decision was a joint one taken by his party and Yadav was free to hold any opinion he wanted to.

Claiming that BJP veteran LK Advani as Union home minister was against Article 371 (J), he said after Congress came to power in 2004, the special status was granted which has benefited people to a large extent today.

Comparing the work done by the Congress with the BJP in the state, he said, "We have invested the same amount of money in three months as BJP had in five years".

Taking a dig at the Modi government for low employment rate, Gandhi said the government in Karnataka is doing a far better job in this regard.
