An official evacuation alert has been expanded to cover the Shambhala Music Festival and the community of Nelway ordered to evacuate, as the McCormick Creek wildfire continues to grow.

In a statement, the RDCK says the fire is 'behaving unpredictably, ' and are strongly advising festival goers to leave at a reasonable time to get back home safely.

Shambhala, which has drawn more than 10,000 festival-goers in years past, began Friday.

Organizers for the festival, attended by about 180,000 people in 2016, had issued a pre-evacuation alert Thursday, warning attendees to be prepared for "changing conditions" and to plan for a sudden evacuation if the conditions worsened.

The BC Wildfire said Saturday morning that the McCormick Creek fire was 2.5 square kilometres in size, and 27 firefighters, four helicopters and six pieces of heavy equipment were being used to fight the flames.
