Same manager, same tactics, better players - Guardiola lays out Man City blueprint

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects to spend less on players next season after a big splash-out in the current transfer window, saying today's squad had been put together with an eye on the future. The Europa League went some way to dispelling the narrative that he is over the hill, but more, greater success is required in order to rid himself of the stigma that came with *that* season with Chelsea.

Anthony Knockaert - A rampaging runner with the ball who was named Championship player of the season after scoring 15 goals and providing assists for another eight.

Guardiola's team get their Premier League campaign underway on Sunday when they travel to face newly-promoted Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bernardo Silva, meanwhile, arrived from Monaco, further strengthening a stellar attacking department that also contains Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling. I hope I can prove I'm just as good as them.

United created a lot of chances against the teams in the bottom half of the table last season but were left frustrated on a number of occasions due to their profligate nature; Lukaku, though still raw in some aspects, will inject his new sign with the ruthlessness they sorely crave.

"We needed to do that this summer because we have one of the oldest teams in Europe".

"If you see in the first games [last season] against Sunderland and especially against Steaua Bucharest, between last season and now, it's completely the same".

"He likes me a lot and I like him a lot as a coach and as a person". It's going to be tough for them.

"I never complained for one bad game or bad defeat, making excuses, never, even in Germany I never said that, never in my life I make an excuse about what happened".

There should not be any shoehorning of players into unfamiliar roles this season after Guardiola signed three top-level full-backs - Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo - at a combined cost of around £124 million.

Guardiola has tested out a three-man defence in pre-season, with Stones lining up alongside Nicolas Otamendi and captain Vincent Kompany, whose ability to remain fit will once again be under scrutiny.

Mourinho added: "We got a central defender that can play in many other positions, which is important".

"City are probably not going to know as much about us as we do about them. I'm not going to change the way I want to play".
