As sporting farewells go it was spectacularly surprising on the double - Usain Bolt pulling up injured in what was his last ever race on the track, while Great Britain won the gold medal - only their second of these World Championships.

In his trademark style, Bolt grabbed the baton from Campbell, who ran the third leg, and blasted ahead of all his rivals and slowed down while approaching the finish line to conserve energy for the finals.

The United States, with Gatlin running the second leg, won the first heat in a world leading time of 37.70 seconds.

It completed a great night for the host nation's sprinters after their women had earlier taken silver behind the Americans in the sprint relay, their best performance since the first championships in 1983.

Felix has won 14 medals at the world championships and can move up to 16 if she runs the 4x400 relay and the United States win medals in both events.

Sports list five of the most memorable track races featuring Jamaican Usain Bolt, who brought down the curtain on his glittering career on Saturday.

"He kept apologising to us but we told him there was no need to apologise", Forte said. I'm sorry he got this injury. "We've got a lot of young guys like Coleman, like [Jaylen] Bacon, myself, we're hungry to go out there for good competition".

Defending champion Julius Yego of Kenya, with a season's best of 87.97m, Czech Jakub Vadlejch (88.02), Finn Tero Pitkamaki (88.27) and Greek Ionnis Kiriazis (88.01m) are sure to be in the mix for the medals. First is the women's high jump final (7.05pm BST) where the reigning world champion, Mariya Lasitskene - competing as an authorised neutral athlete - will take on Spain's 38-year-old Olympic champion Ruth Beitia.

Sally Pearson is back and getting another gold medal at the Olympic Stadium in London.

Rohler, from Germany, made a 88.26m throw in his second attempt and finished fourth while Beijing worlds victor Yego was eliminated after the first three rounds.

Rio Olympic champions USA team regained the women's 4x100m world crown which they last won at the 2011 Daegu worlds, as they sailed to victory in 41.82 seconds.

The event is one of the most loaded of the world championships.
