Pittsburgh Steelers: Players who stood out in first preseason game

However, once Dobbs got over the clearly present nerves, he began to show the strengths that stood out to Pittsburgh on draft day.

RUNNING GAME AND O-LINE: On the Giants' first play from scrimmage, Paul Perkins burst up the middle for seven yards. "He competed nicely, came out of the pocket, had some chances to make some plays, he did fairly well". I thought they were going to head in and let our offense get going, but they wanted the ball first.

After starting the game in place of entrenched Pittsburgh Steelers starter Ben Roethlisberger, Dobbs had a nice early completion before tossing a pair of interceptions. TJ Watt filled the box score on defense demonstrating the hustle and instincts that made him a star at Wisconsin. From the start, Johnson couldn't get into rhythm, and he was the victim of three first-quarter sacks and he has a pass batted away. He laughed when asked when was the last time he had a game like that.

"Adversity hit, but I was proud I was able to respond to that", Dobbs said. "So, like I said, we're going to watch this film and build off it". The Steelers also got three sacks from journeyman veteran LB Arthur Moats, who also picked off Geno Smith. The Steelers 4th round pick Josh Dobbs went 8/15 with a TD and two INTs. No. 1 pick tight end Evan Engram got into the game in the second quarter and caught a pass for 11 yards.

Webb ended up 8-of-16 for 67 yards.

An interception by lineman Devon Taylor led to a 30-yard field goal by Nugent and a 6-0 lead.

QB BACKUPS: Without Manning taking the first snap, the honor belonged to journeyman Josh Johnson. Johnson was 5 of 10 for 31 yards. Smith started the game, completing 10/16 passes for 114 yards. Orleans Darkwa had a modest 18 yards on three carries.

INJURIES: Steelers second-round draft pick JuJu Smith-Schuster left the game with a concussion in the first quarter.

Safety Duke Ihenacho (hamstring) and linebacker Calvin Munson (knee contusion) were the only Giants banged up in the preseason opener, and McAdoo said Munson's ailment is "nothing serious at this point".

Bryant, who sat out the 2016 season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, received limited conditional reinstatement from the NFL in April. Bryant will return to practice Sunday. Odell Beckham, Jr. was also in uniform, but never stepped on the field after warmups. These are relatively small concerns in the grand scheme of things, especially for a first-year player, and he has all of pre-season to work them out before the first snap. However, Bryant did not participate in the game, and is waiting for his time to return. "I worked hard and I'm just happy the process is nearly over".
