Paul Merson: 'Chelsea need to spend'

Chelsea face a huge few weeks in the transfer market and must strengthen before deadline day, insists Paul Merson.

Merson has said that Chelsea, who had Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas sent off at Stamford Bridge, "have to go out and buy" if they are to be competitive in the Premier League and Champions League this term.

However, with the departure of star Kyle Walker to rivals Manchester City alongside there not yet being any players to have joined many are believing that Spurs could drop out of the top four in at the end of the 2017-18 season.

"As a Burnley player, you see their bench before kick-off and there is only Morata on it".

"With how strong this Premier League is, you can not afford to drop points at home to Burnley".

Chelsea made the worst possible start to their title defence on Saturday afternoon, with the Blues losing 3-2 at home to a Burnley team that only won one away match in the Premier League last season.

Though Merson believes 13/2 is rather long, the Sky Sports pundit adds that they must go out and buy before August 31.

"It's probably the kick that they need".

"I think they will just bulldoze teams, I really do".

While commenting on Arsenal, he wrote in his column in the Daily Star, "Arsenal are Arsenal, they won't win it". This isn't a bad team overnight.

"Their away record wasn't great last season and now they're playing 38 away games because of Wembley. It's the same with Tottenham, if you take out five players they don't look so strong".
