In North Hwanghae Province, 89,000 young men pleaded to enlist or reenlist on August 9 alone.

Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's official newspaper, said the volunteers had offered to join or rejoin the People's Army after the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) issued a statement condemning new sanctions imposed by the United Nations in retaliation for North Korean missile tests. In Daedong County of South Pyongan Province, more than 20,000 students, party members and laborers filed enlistment or reenlistment requests.”.

Thousands of workers gathered in the capital Pyongyang in protest and in defiance of Donald Trump's warning of "fire and fury". Trump has repeatedly stated that the White House has run out of patience with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

He tweeted: "Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

Tensions have heightened recently after President Trump warned North Korea would face "fire and fury" if it continued to threaten the United States, prompting the regime to reveal it is considering missile strikes on the U.S. pacific island of Guam, home to Andersen Air Force Base.

In the meantime, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that there is a strong risk that Washington and Pyongyang could engage in military conflict.

It follows the announcement that North Korea had miniaturised a nuclear warhead capable of reaching the mainland US. "The US is a superpower, while North Korea is a small regional player".

The NATO source added that "Article 6 of the Washington Treaty defines the geographical scope of Article 5 primarily as "territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America" or 'islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic Area north of the Tropic of Cancer". "The Guam airbase which North Korea is planning to attack is also covered by USA anti-missile defense", he said.
