After proving his acting mettle in films such as Alejandro G. Iñárritu's The Revenant and Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, Leonardo DiCaprio is now set to play Leonardo Da Vinci, the man who went down in history as the painter of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, in an upcoming biopic.

The Oscar victor will portray the painter, widely considered one of the greatest artists of all time, in a new movie based on Walter Isaacson's book about the man.

According to Deadline, Paramount and Universal had a bidding war over the film rights to a new book by Walter Isaacson called Leonardo da Vinci.

Past actors to take on the role of the original Renaissance man include My Big Fat Greek Wedding's Michael Constantine in an episode of My Favorite Martian and Jim Cummings, in the "Leonardo da Vinci and His Fightin' Genius Time Commandos!".

Leonardo DiCaprio apparently wanted to play the prominent artist as he was so named because his pregnant mother was looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in a museum in Italy when he first kicked.

Paramount is hoping to convince DiCaprio to star in The Devil in the White City, an adaptation of another hit book by author Erik Larsen.

DiCaprio and Scorcese previously worked together on The Wolf of Wall Street, The Aviator, Shutter Island, The Departed, and Gangs of NY. The film will be the Academy Award winning actor's ninth film in which he plays a real-life character.

According to Variety, the film will be titled Leonardo da Vinci and is slated to release on October 17 this year.
