Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield glory was a decent return in the Portuguese's first campaign in the Old Trafford dugout, as was Champions League qualification.

However, he is without a club as he recovers from cruciate knee ligament damage sustained during the Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht in April.

"We'll see. One thing I don't want to change, even if I'm 40 years old, is the hunger I have inside me", he added.

He has trained with the club during his rehabilitation, though, and Mourinho has made clear he still believes the forward can do a job for him.

'When I joined Man United previous year, I thought immediately that we needed a kind of Matic.

Mourinho spoke highly of Hernandez earlier in the week and his admiration of the 29-year-old is obvious. "He's not ready to play tomorrow".

"It's not urgent, not desperate to have it done or not done", said Mourinho.

"He wants more at football's highest level, so we are having conversations and we are discussing the possibility of him staying with us for the second part of the season".

The signings of defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica, midfielder Nemanja Matic from Chelsea and striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton have also lifted the mood.

Mourinho's side begin their Premier League campaign at home to West Ham on Sunday having enjoyed a strong pre-season, winning six out of seven friendlies before losing to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday.

"There are obviously bigger competitions than others, but we will certainly be fighting on all fronts to win as much as we can". But we are involved in four competitions. "He's one of the best managers in the world and it's motivating for me as a player that a manager like him can say that".

'I think every one of us in his own way is equipped to do it.

Mourinho has indicated that he wants a fourth signing before the transfer window shuts on August 31, as he needs a winger to bolster his squad.

"I am not a hard person to work with, and I understand the reality of the market".

"I understand the reality of the market, of the numbers, and I also understand that my club, by doing 75 per cent of what I initially asked for, I think the club did very well". I trust that the player is going to perform, so I think he is a fantastic signing'.

"What would it mean for me to be the Premier League champion?"

"And if, until 31 August, the remaining 25 per cent don't arrive, I will not moan".

"There are a lot of variables that aren't easy but from the outside, it does seem unusual to let that player go to a direct rival - and he will improve them". "Midfield players scoring goals, wingers scoring goals, central defenders good in the air scoring goals at set-pieces. We were focused on the striker scoring goals and when it didn't happen we were in trouble".
