Guam is a launching point for US strategic bombers that the North, virtually flattened by USA bombs during the 1950-53 Korean War, sees as particularly threatening.

However, he later said that the threat was too mild.

In a recent message, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon said, "Since North Korea is very close to crossing the red line, Seoul needs to ramp up all defence measures against North Korea's potential threat", said another Seoul city official who asked not to be identified by name.

After Mr. Moon talked with Mr. Trump on the phone on Monday, his office said he emphasized that "South Korea can never accept a war erupting again on the Korean Peninsula". "There are several layers of ballistic missile defense".

"This is an experimental system - we could potentially miss or hit, we don't know for sure".

The possibility of escalation is made even more acute by the lack of any means of official communication across the Demilitarized Zone, though there has been no easing of the barrage of inflammatory comments in the US and the North since new sanctions against North Korea were announced last week.

In such a scenario, Japan has the right to activate its Aegis destroyer missile defense system, Onodera said during a session of the National Diet. It was also to deploy the anti-missile system in neighbouring Ehime, NHK said.

Still, a certain island calm prevails amid the tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

However, Bennett added, it depended how far away the missiles were targeted, as the total range of THAAD was 200 kilometers (124 miles).

"What we do, however, is monitor it and as you have mentioned, any kind of telltale effect from that kind of incident is something we have to prepare for", he said.

The same day a lawmaker of Russia's upper house of parliament, Viktor Ozerov, told Sputnik that Russian Federation had put on high alert its air defense systems in the country's Far East due to the escalation of the Korean crisis.

The United States has long trumpeted its ability to defend against missiles that threatened the country's territory, which might be what Pyongyang is counting on.

Naval Base Guam is an important outpost for USA fast-attack nuclear powered submarines that are a key means for gathering intelligence in the region, including off the Korean peninsula and in the South China Sea where China has been building military bases on man-made islands that have stirred tension across Asia.

Resident Isaac Camacho, 19, says he feels Guam's relationship with the US mainland is "a little misunderstood on their part".

People in the tiny Pacific island of Guam say they're afraid of being caught in the middle of escalating tensions between the us and North Korea.

If any of the four long-range missiles successfully made it through USA defense, Mount said, it would be a huge victory for the rogue state. It noted which weapons it would use (intermediate range ballistic missiles), how many of them (four) - and the timing: sometime before the end of this month.

North Korea has been keenly monitoring the exercises because the training has been reported to include decapitation attacks to eliminate Kim Jong-Un and his high ranking military officials. If carried out, it would be the North's most provocative missile launch to date.

Mike Benavente, 37, who maintains air conditioners, said he saw the advisory on Facebook, but preferred family time at a beach barbecue to stocking up on supplies and thinking about suitable shelter options.

"If it doesn't, that means you might have some sort of software or system failure and better to find that out in peacetime rather than at war".
