The annual Bud Billiken parade kicked off Saturday and Chance the Rapper, the grand marshal, announced he was giving out free tickets for a concert. He also participated in an effort to handout free backpacks loaded with school supplies to kids and urge politicians to be more involved with local schools.

It has been a big two years for Chance the Rapper, between working diligently with Kanye West on the latter's "The Life of Pablo" album to winning awards at this year's Grammys, BET Awards and iHeartRadio Awards. The parade brought together the community and political foes alike to celebrate heading back to school.

And while Gov. Bruce Rauner made an appearance before the parade, he did not address the funding issue during the event.

"The state of IL has the responsibility not to just show at a parade, not just to cheer, but to actively put resources that taxpayers of the city of Chicago give the state and fund our education equitably and fairly", Emanuel said.
