Cam Newton resumes throwing at practice

Newton is still expected to suit up at some point during the preseason.

"There's no reason to [panic]", Rivera said. When the team returned to the Wofford practice fields Friday, Newton threw in individual drills for the first time since July 30.

Granted, red-zone plays don't require deep throws, but it was still a promising sign for the Panthers and their fans.

"Like I've been telling you guys, it's just a matter of time", head coach Ron Rivera told Panthers.com. "We're going to do what the trainers and doctors say we can do with him with all intent and objective for him to get ready for the season".

The numbers don't exactly show it - Newton managed to throw for 237 yards in a Week 17 loss, a week after going 18 for 43 in a loss to Atlanta - but the quarterback was less than his best self down the stretch last season, as Carolina limped to just two wins in its final six games.

Newton underwent surgery to fix a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder in March. While on a "pitch count", he appeared to be throwing without any pain until the fifth practice.

Rivera said how much Newton participates in the joint practices in Nashville depends on how he responds on Tuesday after having Monday off.

"Today was a good step". "A lot of good things happened".
