After the match, Guardiola spoke about Manchester City's preparation and performance in Saturday's win.

Manchester City kick off their season with a trip to the south coast as they take on newly promoted Brighton & Hove Albion this evening.

Sergio Agüero and Lewis Dunk (own goal) scored for the Blues and guaranteed a key victory to start the season.

"So we have to disregard most of it, because it's something that we can't affect".

"After the first one it was a little bit easier but the first game is always a little bit complicated".

"For us, we're up against top-class opposition that will have more possession than we do".

As a result the 46-year-old boss is under pressure to win something this season and Distin believes if the club can fix its defensive problems they are contenders for the title. It was hard but we did it. We will try to improve.

"We have to learn to attack better", Guardiola said.

Brighton was successfully repelling City's potent strike force until a costly lapse.

"Guardiola added: "And we ran a lot. Big congratulations to all the people in Manchester City - we are a strong club".

"Anthony Knockaert seems to be one of Brighton's better players". That is when I am proud.

I think Huddersfield might struggle given they were very inconsistent in the Championship run-in. Such a simple thing appeared beyond Bravo last season, and though Ederson's lack of commitment to Suttner's cross in the 55th minute and the chaos that followed suggested he was not totally comfortable, a clean sheet is a good start. Today our box was ideal and in the opponents box we scored two goals but we created more.

"We are going to see at the end of the season what happens", he indicated.

Who will come out on top in the battle of the managers Chris Hughton or Josep Guardiola?

"It is disappointing but that is the quality Manchester City have got and we know that", he said.

"Probably a draw would have been good result for them but we needed a win".
