Steelers WR Martavis Bryant Cleared To Play In Preseason

Talk about having special status. Giants fans have waited a loooooong time to see the 2017 version of their team, and Friday they finally get a glimpse. Bryant was conditionally reinstated by the league in April, and he took part in organized team activities and minicamp. Expect Bryant to make his return next Saturday when the Steelers battle the Atlanta Falcons.

In discussing the possibility of shortening the preseason, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin does not seem to be in favor of such a plan. The Alabama product was quiet early in camp but is coming off a couple of encouraging practices.

"Martavis Bryant has been informed by the National Football League that he is now permitted to participate in all preseason activities, including practices and games".

Bryant missed the entire 2016 season because of multiple substance abuse violations including absences from drug tests and a prior four game suspension in 2015.

Why that hasn't happened yet is the big mystery at the Steelers' camp. How he fares against the Steelers will go a long way toward telling us just how much he'll help.

Bryant has been limited to working out on his own on an adjacent field to his teammates throughout camp.

LAST MEETING: The Giants lost to the Steelers, 24-14, last December in a regular season game at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. At best, they might tune in when they hear that the star players are going to be in for a while, but even then the result is ultimately meaningless.

"I think we just understand the run game as a whole better", Richburg said. "(But) there's value in practice, obviously".

However, Wednesday's announcement allows the 25-year-old Bryant to practice with the team and play in preseason games.

Football is back - sort of.

At least there's a bit of definition with Bell's case. And not only in the regular season. "We're not only talking about the elephant in the room - his contractual situation - but our relationship continues to move in a manner it has moved since we drafted him".

Roethlisberger, meanwhile, says he's been unsuccessful in connecting with Bell.

Left unsaid were a couple of other issues: the Steelers won't rescind the tender to Bell, which would make him an unrestricted free agent, nor would they offer more money than the $12.1 million on a one-year deal to entice Bell to sign.

Since the franchise tag was placed on Bell and he doesn't have a signed contract in place, he can not be fined for skipping practice.
