A club pro's path to the PGA Championship leads through section championships and the PGA Professional National Championship, where the top 20 finishers earn invitations.

Mickelson identified the mental part of the game as the culprit this week.

"If I have a short putt, it's not a technical issue - I'm just not seeing the ball go in and staying committed", Mickelson said. "I got everything going", Fox told Radio Sport after his second round.

"It was really the only option I had", McIlroy explained.

"The first 15 holes, especially, I was driving the ball very, very well and that made it a bit easier", said the world No. 78, a four-time European Tour victor. I'm having a tough time controlling my thoughts and not letting (them) wander to what I don't want to have happen. I made a birdie and then a couple of pars.

He has his brother, Tim, caddying for the time being.

"I think they could slow them up a little bit, I really do. If I grabbed a couple of those, then I would be pleased".

"To be honest with you, I felt like c**p". I have great practice sessions. "I'm not really focused out there".

Ryan Fox has carded the third-lowest round of the PGA Championship to catapult up the leaderboard in the second round of the year's final major, at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The bigger picture bad news for Mickelson is that he's now 17th on the Presidents Cup points list, meaning his fate of representing the USA for an incredible 23rd consecutive Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup will probably be in the hands of captain Steve Stricker - and assistant captain Tiger Woods.

Mickelson has played in every Presidents Cup, which began in 1994.

He's now 17th in the point standings and will likely fall further back after this weekend. "I've actually had a lot of fun this last year and a half, two years, working with Andrew Getson, trying to get back on top. Even if they didn't do anything else to the golf course and just changed it to full Bermuda like it is now, all of a sudden makes the golf course two shots more hard".

McIlroy has barely made the cut and won at Quail Hollow in the past.

Mickelson had a chance to win the PGA in 2014 and Pebble Beach in 2016, and he hadn't missed a cut all year until The Open last month.

Australia's Jason Day, the 2015 PGA victor and last year's runner-up, was third at five-under after 10 holes of his second round.

Making up the strokes will be a lot harder this week. "I don't know, as low as I can go".

"The score won't be any higher than it was today if I'm driving the ball like today".

But his luck ran out as he paid the price for a wayward day with the driver, sliding to four over with three to play before he comfortably avoided an early exit with crucial birdies at the seventh and eighth.

Man-of-the-moment Matsuyama emulated the brilliance of his final-round 61 which swept him to victory at last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational as he birdied five of the last seven holes in a flawless 64 which was interrupted by a delay of one hour, 42 minutes due to a passing thunderstorm.

The 33-year-old from SC has won twice on the PGA Tour, and has also lost four times in playoffs.

After his 74 Friday left him at 11-over par for the tournament, Mickelson said he had played "atrocious" golf at both the British Open in July and this week at the PGA. "I would like to play more over here, definitely".
