It has been another strong showing of City's financial muscle but Guardiola insists the club have only paid market rates and such major rebuilding work is a one-off.

"Hopefully next season I will be here and we will not spend how we spent this season", Guardiola told reporters ahead of City's Premier League opener at Brighton on Saturday. I assure you that.

"So although it will be hard to get a point or three against Manchester City, it's not impossible".

But the Belgium global failed to convince Mourinho during their time together at Chelsea and will be playing in the Champions League proper for the first time.

Appointed club captain shortly after his arrival at the club, Kolo stayed at City for four years, during which time he made more than 100 appearances for the club across all competitions. But also the motivation is higher.

Mourinho's teams traditionally peak in his second season and he has strengthened in each department with the acquisitions of Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku.

Guardiola said: "It is not just us".

"My family and I were fortunate enough to travel across seven states, driving over 2,000 miles, following Manchester City on tour (in America) this summer and we had the most fantastic time". We tried to make it a young squad and we did it earlier and we are lucky because it would be more expensive now in the last weeks.

Ibrahimovic to miss the most matches of the next season and his career can be over if it won't be any better.

Guardiola believes the Neymar deal has over-inflated the market to levels that can not be maintained.

"It's not because I have always done it [won the title in his second season] that I am going to do it again", he said.

Guardiola's side have been installed as title favourites but the former Barcelona boss is not taking anything for granted and anticipates a tough start.

Champions Chelsea could give a debut to Spain striker Alvaro Morata at home to Burnley, while last season's runners-up Tottenham Hotspur, who have yet to sign any players in the transfer window, visit promoted Newcastle United on Sunday.

"We have had a better pre-season than previous year and we have the confidence levels of a team that has won a European competition and returned to the Champions League".

"There's a huge gulf between the Championship and the top Premier League teams and having watched City in pre-season, they look like they are in the mood for a good start. But we try to win the game".
