Mapped: US and Allied Missile Defenses Against North Korea

President Donald Trump pledged this week to meet any threats from the North Korean government with a response of "fire and fury".

Guam, an unincorporated US territory, is a strategic outpost about 2,100 miles south-east of Pyongyang. On Friday, Trump tweeted that "Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

"This is great for Kim Jong Un, who desperately craves recognition".

"The U.S. has maintained a regular bomber presence in the Indo-Asia-Pacific since 2004 and this mission demonstrated our continued ironclad commitment to regional allies".

South Korea's Kospi index fell as much as 1.2% as foreigners sold shares, before paring the drop to 0.4% at the close. The days of war rhetoric have alarmed global leaders.

Kuntz said that nothing has changed in terms of Joint Region Marianas' procedures when it comes to communications between the military and dependents.

But let's take a step back for a moment: Where is Guam, and why is it in North Korea's crosshairs?

"I don't think there's anything to worry about".

As tension escalated this week between the United States and North Korea, the world turned its attention to the US territory of Guam, which North Korean state media reported had become the target of a retaliatory attack.

Spain claimed Guam in 1565, more than 40 years after Ferdinand Magellan landed on the island.

Guam itself is equipped with its own THAAD missile system, which could intercept any missiles launched from Pyongyang toward the island. There are no air raid drills or cars in camouflage netting as was the case during previous crises.

North Korea assured the ASEAN it will be a "responsible nuclear power" and will pose no threat to other countries - unless they join forces with the United States. State-run media ensure that the population gets the North Korean side of the story, but don't convey any sense of global concern about the situation.

Guam is home to two military bases housing more than 6,000 Americans.

With North Korea threatening to send a salvo of ballistic missiles close to Guam, a USA military hub in the Pacific, pressure could grow for Washington to put its multibillion-dollar missile defense system into use and shoot them out of the air.
