North Korea has announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles into the seas around the US Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to US bombers.

Calvo said he was called by White House chief of staff John Kelly and Trump Saturday morning local time and "both assured me that the people of Guam are safe".

"We're going to do a great job", Trump told Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo, in video of the president's telephone call broadcast on "Anderson Cooper 360" on CNN.

"Eddie, I have to tell you, you've become extremely famous", said the president, who telephoned from Bedminster, New Jersey, where's he on a working vacation.

Earlier, President Trump said the United States military was "locked and loaded" to deal with North Korea, should the need arise, as the countries' leaders increased bellicose rhetoric this week.

The call comes just hours after Trump held a question-and-answer session with reporters, during which he said he had not yet talked with Calvo.

Trump replied, "We'll see how it all works out and you're not going to have a problem. I'm glad you're holding the helm, Sir". "All over the world, they are talking about Guam".

"And your tourism, I can say this, your tourism is going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you", Mr Trump said, praising the island's beauty, to which Mr Calvo encouraged Mr Trump to visit. Reuters reported that Trump said if Kim utters one threat or does anything with respect to Guam or any other American territory or ally, "He (Kim) will truly regret it, and he will regret it fast".

"It could happen", the president said. "It just looks like a attractive place", he says.

He then reassures Mr Calvo, who he describes as a "hell of a guy", telling him the USA military is "rock solid".

These are among the guidelines Guam has released as, amid escalating tensions with North Korea, the small Pacific island contemplates the nightmare scenario of a nuclear strike.
