Friday's Twins-Detroit game recap

His biggest play of the night came in right field.

The Tigers went on to lose, 9-4, at Comerica Park.

How to separate Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler, corner outfielders who each had three hits, a homer and three RBI? "It wasn't a comfortable game by any means". Twins starter Kyle Gibson allowed three runs, five hits and two walks in 4⅔ innings. "We're pretty confident in who we are and who we have in here in our locker room". "It might seem like false confidence, but I don't think that's it at all".

With Anibal Sanchez's rough outing against the Orioles on August 6, 2017 in mind, here are the five Detroit Tigers starters since 1913 to allow five home runs in a game. He struck out six without walking a batter, but all five runs scored on two homers.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Mikie Mahtook's eighth home run of the season.

Minnesota got on the board in the fourth. With one out, Joe Mauer and Miguel Sano singled and Rosario followed with a homer into the Tigers' bullpen - his 15th of the season.

Buxton received applause from the Detroit crowd after his spectacular catch of Miguel Cabrera's 410-foot line drive. "Buck (center fielder Buxton) got turned around on the (Cabrera) ball, the spin kind of brought it back to his other shoulder and somehow he made the adjustment, which was phenomenal".

"That was just a great piece of hitting", Sanchez said. They were both two-seamers up.

Andrew Romine walked and scored on a double to left by Jose Iglesias with one out in the fifth to get Detroit within 5-2. Upton's RBI single pulled the Tigers within 7-4 in the bottom of the inning, but Cabrera grounded out to end the inning. Detroit's Nicholas Castellanos foolishly tried to tag up and advance to third on the out but was cut down on Kepler's throw to Brian Dozier and relay to Eduardo Escobar.

"I do my best to defend guys, but I can't defend that", he said. "It makes no sense to me".

Castellanos said he misjudged Kepler's catch. "Obviously, I wouldn't do it again".

Miguel Cabrera's lost extra-base hit counted for only one out, but it neatly summarized the opportunistic play - and the can-you-believe-this attitude - that the Twins have ridden to a six-game winning streak, their longest in almost two years. Twins LHP Glen Perkins made the first of three rehab appearances Thursday for Double-A Chattanooga, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning.

NOTES: RHP Michael Fulmer threw a 20-pitch bullpen Friday and could start Monday for Detroit in Texas if he comes out with no more irritation to his ulnar nerve. The Tigers activated OF Alex Presley.

Sanchez was the toughest starter in baseball to homer against in 2013-14, giving up 13 in 308 innings.

WHITE SOX 6, ROYALS 3: At Chicago, Tim Anderson hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run, seventh-inning rally, Reynaldo Lopez pitched six strong innings in his White Sox debut and Chicago won its fourth straight.

Twins: Jose Berrios (10-5, 3.86) will pitch the second game of the series for Minnesota on Saturday night.

The Tigers trailed, 5-1, before scoring twice in the fifth. Sanchez has lost three of his last four starts.
