Jamie Carragher has admitted that he was very surprised to see Chelsea sanction the sale of Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United.

However, Conte has recently said that his debut season as the Blues boss was the hardest in his managerial career which has continued as he vented his frustration over the club's inactivity in the transfer window.

Chelsea let Matic leave only after they had brought in Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, but the Frenchman has yet to prove himself in the Premier League. The Serbian was one of last season's standout players, and his addition would strengthen rivals United.

There is still the lingering issue of the future of Diego Costa who was widely expected to leave the club this summer.

Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports on Monday Night, Carragher said: "The Matic deal is a ideal example".

"The longer this all goes on, there's always going to be that destruction for Chelsea".

"The success they've had in changing manager means they're not going to take anything like that off Conte".

"I think he's the type of manager who won't accept the involvement from people above, especially on the back of winning the title", Carragher added when speaking to Sky Sports.

Nemanja Matic attempted 1,826 passes in the Premier League last season. Since Abramovich came in I think they've won more trophies than anyone.

"They have a model where they have a big say over how that club is run; the owner, Emanalo and people involved there".

Liverpool were forced to back away from Van Dijk following accusations they spoke to the player without Southampton's permission and Conte will hope that hands him an advantage.

Though the west London club have spent nearly £130m bringing in Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata, their arrivals have coincided with the departure of some 17 players, including Nemanja Matic who joined arch rivals Manchester United in a £40m deal. Despite the additions to Chelsea's squad, there are still qualms that the title winners will not have enough depth for their Champions League campaign this season.
