Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has spoken of their controversial swoop for Luis Figo at Barcelona.

The Los Blancos president recently spoke about Luis Figo's controversial move to the Santiago Bernabeu from FC Barcelona in 2000, admitting that it was hard to convince the retired Portugal global to join the club.

Perez told FOX Sports (via Marca): "Nobody had spent 60 million euros in 2000".

"I convinced him (Luis Figo) but it was not easy, he was the captain of Barcelona!"

From Perez's perspective, however, the transfer was the start of something special, with Real proceeding to establish a team comprised of some of the world's standout players.

"I told him that we wanted to build this project around him", he added.

Beckham is one of the most recognisable faces in the history of football and he played for Real between 2003 and 2007, during which time he helped them win the La Liga title and Supercopa de Espana. "And now David Beckham too is going to join up with us as an ambassador".

The Portuguese star made 239 appearances for Real in total and scored 57 goals before joining Inter Milan in 2005.
