The small US territory of Guam has become a focal point after North Korea's army threatened to use ballistic missiles to create an "enveloping fire" around the island.

The church is an influential force on the island, where the vast majority of residents are Catholic, and the Archdiocese of Agana - the capital of Guam, also known as Hagatna - has advised residents to "look to God during these hard times when world peace is threatened".

"I think that we do not have any good options", Mistry said.

Coffman stresses however North Korea has flown into waters near major countries before - most notably Japan.

There's a sense of patriotism among those who cite the island's history of Guam residents serving in the USA military.

Some posters lament the lack of knowledge about Guam on the part of most USA residents.

But there's also some resentment about not being able to vote in the general election for USA president.

Mistry believes the US should be focused right now on avoid a war.

During the Vietnam War, the Air Force sent 155 B-52 bombers to Andersen to hit targets in Southeast Asia.

Resident Isaac Camacho, 19, says he feels Guam's relationship with the US mainland is "a little misunderstood on their part".

"Good Morning, my dear people of Guam", began the governor. They also say missile defense is too expensive to be America's primary strategy. "And not a lot of Americans know that".

"Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely", the president said on Twitter, adding "hopefully Kim Jong-un will find another path!"

The Lancers were joined by South Korea KF-16 multi-role fighter and Japanese Mitsubishi F-2 multi-role jets. Seoul is 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) to the northwest, Tokyo is 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) north and Taipei is 1,700 miles (2,700 kilometers) west.

Guam is armed with the U.S. Army's defense system known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which can intercept missiles.
