She says what's new this year at the Iowa State Fair is a pair of national livestock shows from August 17 through the 20th.

One, called the "city country reboot", is similar in theme to the standard county plate Iowa has used since 1997 in that it includes the Des Moines skyline on one side of "Iowa" and a windmill and farm on the other. "We are patriotic. We are forward thinking. We take pride in our state's natural beauty and embrace both our rural and urban heritage".

Iowans can vote for their favorite design at the DOT's booth (number 762-764) in the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds or online at

Williamson says you won't go hungry if you attend the Iowa State Fair as they have over 40 different foods available for your to sample. The design has been dubbed: "Flying Our Colors". "It's extremely hard to try to represent all the great things about Iowa on a small, 12-by-6 inch plate".

"These designs were created by professional graphic artists who are dedicated state employees of the Iowa Department of Transportation, so our own are designing these new plates", Reynolds said. "They're talented individuals who worked hard to really capture the core and the essense of our great state". "Specialty" license plates and plates with a collegiate design will not be changed.

Voting will be open until August 20th. New plates with a new design will start being issued sometime next year.
