Reports linking Ivorian right back, Serge Aurier to Old Trafford were quickly debunked by club sources, and Jose has now set his sights on signing Fabinho.

However, that deal has collapsed after the Frenchman was refused a work visa for England, Don Balon say.

That has led to Mourinho turning his attentions to Monaco's Fabinho.

The Red Devils, who take on Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday, have also signed Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku as Mourinho prepares for his second campaign in charge at Old Trafford.

The French champions snubbed their advances and have also reportedly rejected a £36.1m (€40m) offer from Atletico Madrid in recent weeks.

Manager Jose Mourinho has asked Manchester United to intensify their efforts to sign Fabino, the Sun has claimed.

Despite Mourinho's request to United to secure Fabinho's services, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will need to pull out all the stop to convince them to sell.

Monaco face a struggle to retain the league title after first-team stars Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue Bakayoko were sold to Premier League sides Manchester City and Chelsea earlier in the summer.
