Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officials said the USS John S. McCain traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, in a challenge to China's territorial claims.

With all eyes on North Korea after President Trump promised "fire and fury", the U.S. Navy quietly dispatched a warship to sail by one of China's artificial islands in the South China Sea.

It is the third time this year that United States ships traveled within 12 nautical miles of land claimed by China, the report said. Filipino security official says the Philippine military was notified by U.S. officials of the operation aimed at challenging China's territorial claims in the disputed waters but added that Philippine forces were not involved.

The US Navy has patrolled the area in what it calls freedom of navigation exercises, while Beijing claims the Philippines and Vietnam use Washington's support to escalate the situation in the region.
