Defence officials on Guam say there is no imminent threat to people there or in the Northern Mariana Islands after North Korea said it was examining its plans for attacking the US-held Pacific island.

The bombers are flying show of force missions near North Korea as tensions grow over that country's nuclear weapons program and threats of striking the US mainland with intercontinental ballistic missiles.

KCNA quoted a spokesman of the Strategic Force of the Korean People's Army (KPA) as saying late Tuesday that DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un has "recommended examination of a powerful and effective action plan for containing the USA imperialists' aggression hardware, as the US forces are resorting to inappropriate and reckless military actions in the sensitive area".

The Post story, citing unnamed U.S. intelligence officials, said the confidential analysis was completed last month by the U.S. Defence Intelligence Agency. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence could not immediately be reached for comment.

Guam's Department of Homeland Security and Office of Civil Defense say they are monitoring North Korea with US military and government officials.
