ITC to Launch Probe into Qualcomm Allegations Against Apple

The International Trade Commission, a bipartisan organization providing trade expertise, intends to launch an investigation into Qualcomm's (QCOM) allegations of patent infringement by Apple (AAPL) related to its iPhone 7 and other devices, Reuters reports.

The ITC said it will make its decision "at the earliest practicable time" and will establish a deadline for finalizing its probe within the next 45 days. In July, Qualcomm asked a court to ban sales of iPhones containing technology that the company has patented.

Things are heating up between Apple and Qualcomm. Last month, Qualcomm asked the ITC to investigate the matter, and to bar Apple from importing into the United States iPhones that use cellular baseband processors other than those supplied by Qualcomm's affiliates. It said Apple was free to choose chips from a variety of vendors without necessarily infringing Qualcomm's patents.

The fight before trade regulators in Washington is one of several major legal battles involving Qualcomm and Apple.
