He could get bumped into a starting spot before the season begins.

Shanahan was asked if the injury to Smith was long-term.

Maiocco went on to describe Garnett was not listed as day-to-day, which means the injury could be something more significant. "Again, I don't know exactly for sure but I know there's some stuff in his knee that we're probably going to have to clean up".

Garnett, who has been working with the first-team offense at left guard, is dealing with a left knee that could require a "clean-up" type of surgery. Though not pretty, the 49ers starting offensive line will likely consist of Joe Staley, Zane Beadles, Jeremy Zuttah, Brandon Fusco, and Trent Brown.

"Malcolm seemed a bit more serious", Shanahan said. Rapoport also noted rookie linebacker Reuben Foster could see his playing time increased if Smith is forced to miss extended time. Smith suffered the injury during Saturday's practice, which was held in front of over 25,000 fans at Levi's Stadium. Reuben Foster, the 49ers second first-round pick of the 2017 draft, has had no shortage of splash plays, snagging four interceptions so far and drawing positive reviews from general manager John Lynch. Yet he has injury concerns of his own, recently coming off a surgically repaired shoulder this offseason.

For now, one can only hope these two injuries aren't too serious and both players are back in action before too long.

Ideally, the Niners wouldn't be rushed into starting Foster.
