Guillermo Varela is leaving Manchester United.

Varela is reportedly set to move back to Uruguay, after failing to impress in England and enduring a poor loan spell in Germany.

Meanwhile, according to MEN Sport, Penarol have agreed a transfer fee with United for the defender under a 3-year deal, which includes a sell-on clause, and the transfer could be confirmed by next week.

"Guillermo chose to play in Penarol for personal tranquility", a source close to the player told the Manchester Evening News. The defender provided a bright spark during Louis van Gaal's final season at Old Trafford but he potentially lacked the quality to maintain a sustained role in the first-team.

The right-back, 24, has played just four times in four years at Old Trafford and injury limited him to just seven games on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt last season. It seemed pretty clear that United boss Jose Mourinho was not keen on giving Varela a chance last season and he is unlikely to break his way into the first-team in the upcoming campaign. His experience in Europe was not good.

However, after the injury setback, he was asked to sit out of the German Cup following a weird row with the club officials.Varela got a tattoo against the wishes of head coach Niko Kovac, which became inflamed, and the 24-year-old was then suspended by Eintracht with immediate effect for what was seen as "grossly negligent behaviour", ending hopes of a loan extension.
