Economist Rajiv Kumar is NITI Aayog's new vice-chief

Rajiv Kumar is now a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, a non-governmental think tank on public policy based out of New Delhi.

Noted Economist Rajiv Kumar was on Saturday appointed as the new Secretary of Niti Aayog. An author of several books, Kumar released one past year called "Modi and his Challenges".

Kumar is now the founding director of Pahle India Foundation, a non-profit research organisation that specialises in policy-oriented research and analysis.

On August 1, Arvind Panagariya resigned from his post as vice chairman, and will hand over charge of his office on August 31. The five-year plan system will be discontinued after the end of the 12th five year plan in 2017, ending six-decade old policy framework inspired by the Gosplan-aided industrialisation of the erstwhile Soviet Union. He was among a handful of economists to have backed demonetisation at a time when most of his peers were highly critical of the move.Vinod Paul, a professor of paediatrics at AIIMS, has also been appointed member of Niti Aayog, an agency report said.

He presently sits on the boards of several global and national institutions, including the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center in Riyadh, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and Asia in Jakarta, the State Bank of India, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. He is an independent member in the high-level search committee for appointment of regulators in the Indian financial sector, a government-nominated independent director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India, an independent director on the Board of Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd, and a member of the Advisory Board of CISCO India.
