Cutler's past with Gase makes Dolphins a smart fit

Next in line on the Dolphins' depth chart is veteran QB Matt Moore, who played in five games past year.

For now, the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart is Matt Moore, but reports are that Jay Cutler could be willing to restart his career in the National Football League rather than be up in the broadcast booth for Fox Sports. The indications since he was released were that Cutler would only return to the playing field if he was given the opportunity to start, and that could be available in Miami.

But to date, the Dolphins did not seek out a quarterback to complete with Moore for the starting spot.

He was wearing a brace when his knee gave out near the right sideline while running full speed to escape tackle Ndamukong Suh. But his knee buckled on a scramble Thursday, and he fell without being hit. Adam Gase has never had a true mobile quarterback. If he undergoes surgery, he would likely be out until next season.

Gase said Friday that surgery was an option for Tannehill, but there is no timetable for a decision. "Everything is on the table right now". However, those are three big "ifs", a lot has to happen before we see Kristin Cavalari's instagram posts on South Beach. But Gase's familiarity and recent history with Cutler factors in more significantly than any controversy around Kaepernick in evaluating the Dolphins situation.

Cutler is just one of "multiple" veteran signal callers contacted by Miami, but is the most prominent of the bunch, per the report.

The pair worked together in 2015 when Gase served as the Bears' offensive coordinator before moving on to take the Dolphins job in 2016. Per RapSheet, Cutler is Miami's "top choice" if Ryan Tannehill (knee) is ruled out for the season. Will Ross ignore the issues that could arise in the locker room between Kaepernick and linebacker Kiko Alonso, a Cuban-American who said previous year that there is "some bad blood there for me with Kaepernick" after his comments about Castro?

The possibility of Colin Kaepernick as an option will create conversation, especially if the Dolphins choose Cutler over the former 49ers quarterback.
