Swepson, who was part of the Test squad in India earlier this year but did not make his debut, has taken 41 wickets at 32.82 in his 14-game first-class career.

"Mitchell is a very exciting young leg-spinner who we think will benefit immensely from further experience in the sub-continent".

CA said the soreness is in a similar spot to where he has previously suffered stress fractures.

An original 13-man party was named in June for the tour, which had appeared under threat before a long-running pay dispute between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers' Association was settled this week.

With Mitchell Starc unavailable because of the same foot injury that had forced him to return home in March from India, selectors have made a decision to add more variety in their spinning stocks.

It means Australia now has three spinners in the squad, with Nathan Lyon and Ashton Agar already in the mix.

Australia Test squad: Steve Smith (captain), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade.

The two match Test series will be played between 27th August and 8th September with Mirpur and Chittagong being the venues.
