Sri Lanka has recalled left-handed batsman Lahiru Thirimanne in its squad for the second Test against India as a replacement for injured Asela Gunaratne.

He is the fourth frontline spinner in contention for a spot in the XI, in addition to Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera, and Malinda Pushpakumara. "He actually played on Sunday morning and has batted the last couple of days", Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka's cricket manager and selector, said. In the latest blow, pacer Suranga Lakmal has been ruled out of the second Test against India with a back injury.

Sri Lanka will be hoping to level the series in Colombo before the third and final Test takes place in Pallekelle from the 12-16 August.

"The day before the Test we will see whether he can drift the ball, it will come down to that".

Options are what Sri Lanka lack now. Even Herath, the side's most experienced spinner, bowled at an economy of 3.98 and could dismiss only one Indian batsman in the first innings.

The talented southpaw Lahiru Thirmanne has been added to the squad. Despite the reinforcements, it would be a huge loss if Sri Lanka are to play the 2nd Test, which is a must-win match, without the experience of Herath.

Sri Lanka have strengthened their spin armoury with the inclusion of Chinaman Lakshan Sandakan. However, in the domestic cricket, he has done a good job. He also scored a fluent 59 against India in the lone warm-up match ahead of the three-match series.
