The other officers fired at the driver, hitting him several times.

"As he was serving our citizens today, trying to get dope off the streets of Waco the suspect intentionally ran over an officer, trying to elude getting a search warrant on him", Swanton said.

The suspect was shot repeatedly and suffered several gunshot wounds to the head.

During the incident, the officer began to approach the vehicle with Bradley in it. Bradley then accelerated and pinned the officer under the SUV-like vehicle.

Officers had to cut the officer's uniform from the drivetrain and officers lifted the SUV off of the officer.

The officer was uniformed in tactical gear and clearly distinguishable to the suspect, Swanton said.

The officer was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center with severe head injuries and was in emergency surgery late Tuesday morning, Swanton said.

The officer was critically injured, but is expected to recover.

Waco police said the only reason they fired was to stop the suspect's hostile actions toward the officer.

As of noon, the officer is in critical but stable condition with his family by his side.

The officer received multiple fractures.

Paramedics were performing CPR as they transported the suspect to Hillcrest, where he died.

"The suspect made the decision to run our officer down", Swanton said.

"That is an attempted capital murder".

The family of the suspect identified him as Kerry Bradley, 37. "The suspect, who I think Sergeant Swanton has told you passed away, he has family and our thoughts are with that family as well".

The suspect, police said, lives in the neighborhood in which the incident occurred.

Texas Rangers will join the investigation of the shooting.
