"On the surface my life seems pretty good-I have a career and everything-but I feel isolated and lonely.' So then I threw myself into school, but again it was just this sort of running, running, running". When I was a teenager I got over certain addictions, and that's when I started acting, at age 17.

Franco has since taken the time to re-evaluate his life and it's only now, at 39, that he feels he is starting to find balance.

In an interview with OUT Magazine released on Tuesday, James Franco opens up about coming to terms with his addictive personality and battling depression throughout is career. "I realized, "Man, I'm so depressed".

"I really threw myself into it, and that became everything, to the point where I didn't even socialize", said Franco, who next stars in HBO's "The Deuce" and "The Disaster Artist".

And James is glad that one of his first directorial roles was The Deuce because he got to work with Maggie Gyllenhaal and, although it was a sex scene, she helped him settle into the leading role as she set the bar for the all the other actors.

Despite his struggles with addiction, Franco said he would never give up.

The Deuce premieres this fall in September 2017 on HBO.

When he was asked about the period drama, James Franco said that the project was personally introduced to him by David Simon during a meeting three years ago. "If you make it as real as possible, if you're not stylizing it, you can show the sex, you can show all the actual stuff because you're showing what happened", he added.

"I had to direct sex scenes in The Deuce and... whooo, it was interesting, I have to say", Franco later replied.

The award-winning actor went on to praise Maggie Gyllenhaal for doing a great job in handling herself and co-actors while filming the explicit scenes.

Actor James Franco smiles during ceremonies unveiling his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in Hollywood March 7, 2013.
