"There's was the second youngest team in Europe among the top five teams last season and yet they finished second in the Premier League which is the most competitive league".

But former director of football Comolli believes manager Mauricio Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy deserve a lot of credit for building such a special squad and that it was always going to an extremely hard task to make them better.

Vertonghen played for two years under De Boer at Ajax before moving to White Hart Lane in 2012 - and his Spurs team-mates Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen also worked with the 47-year-old in Amsterdam.

"I think Tottenham deserve so much respect for what they've achieved", Comolli told talkSPORT.

'He is one of the best full-backs in the world and unfortunately he goes to another [Premier League] team, but we have to focus ourselves'.

Spurs Boss Mauricio Pochettino has yet to sign a single player in the transfer market but remains unfazed by the grandiose exploits of the other big clubs. It's a great thing to play in.

Alderweireld is under contract at Tottenham until the summer of 2019 - but has revealed talks regarding a new deal have never come to fruition.

"So to reinforce that team with players who are as good or better than those players, and as young too, it's nearly an impossible task". The youthful German worldwide is entering his final year of contract with Hoffenheim and could be available for a discounted price of £3.1m this summer.

Defender Jan Vertonghen urged the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to continue splashing the cash and does not believe it will have an impact on the title race. The managers are tinkering with their squads in order to find the flawless balance for their teams as the season draws closer.

"Pound-for-pound, every player could play for nearly every club in the world, that's how good that starting 11 is".
