Steve McCabe, Labour MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, tweeted a picture of his injuries yesterday after being hit in the face with a brick while knocking on doors with volunteers in the city's Yardley Wood area.

The MP for Birmingham, Selly Oak, said he was suffering from a "very sore & swollen face" after being attacked on Greenford Road in Kings Heath on Monday night. "Send them to me anonymously & I'll do the rest with the police".

He told his 13,000 followers: "Tonight nursing a very sore & swollen face". I was struck with a brick by a motorbike thug in Greenford Rd. "Have given a full statement to police".

Mr McCabe was flooded with messages of sympathy from the public and fellow politicians after sharing his injury on social media.

Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said: 'That's shocking Steve, that really could have been a very lot worse!

Jo Swinson, deputy Liberal Democrat leader, tweeted: "Horrific!" Hope they catch them asap.

"I mean we've had umpteen complaints about this kind of risky behaviour and so I shouted at them to pack it in or I'd call the police. Hope you get rest over Aug".

We wish Steve all the best.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said the incident is being investigated.

"Although the injuries sustained are minor, this kind of behaviour is not acceptable and the matter is being dealt with seriously".
