Aston Martin is expected to offer the new Vantage with a choice of either a sixspeed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Before the year is out Aston Martin will not only debut its new 2018 FIA GTE Vantage race vehicle, but also its new twin-turbocharged V8 Vantage road auto, the long overdue replacement for the current 13 year old Vantage. Previous test mules have been wearing cut down DB11 bodies. The baby Aston Martin is instead influenced by the DB10 - designed for the James Bond movie Spectre - and the Vulcan hypercar.

It will use a front-engined, rear-wheel drive architecture related to the DB11 but, unlike the old V8 Vantage, there will be greater visual differentiation between the two cars.

The first Vantage to launch internationally will be the entry-level model sporting Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that is expected to produce about 500hp.

Either way, the Vantage is bound to be quicker and more efficient than the vehicle it is due to replace, which is powered by a 4.7-litre naturally aspirated V8 that is based on the Jaguar AJ V8 that was first introduced in 1996. It will feature an eight-speed paddleshift automatic, like the DB11 - and may in time also get that car's turbo V12 engine, creating a follow-up to the V12 Vantage cult auto. Later this year Aston Martin will also launch the DB11 V8 in preparation for the arrival of Bentley's new Continental GT. Expect a low 4.0-second 0-60mph time and a 190mph plus maximum.

The new Vantage will be a sports vehicle rival to the Porsche 911, sitting below the DB11 as the "entry-level" Aston Martin.
