Chicago ended July with 74 people murdered, a higher count than last year's total, as the police department released a wave of crime fighting tactics created to combat the city's gun problem.

A four-year-old boy is among three dozen people shot over the weekend here in Chicago, in a month that saw 74 murders. Last month there were a total of 410 shooting victims.

Chicago seems to be on track to beat last year's homicide count though.

Something to keep in mind about Chicago, though: Per capita, there are several cities with higher homicide rates. Chicago didn't mark 400 homicides until August 1 past year. However, the actual number of shootings has gone down by about 13 percent. Five police districts experienced a decrease in shootings compared to 2016 and 2015, according to the release.

The latest numbers in this city amid federal help in cracking down on crime. The department said expanding its predictive policing strategy has helped reduce crime in Chicago's Englewood, Deering, Harrison and Austin neighborhoods.
