Stardew Valley Multiplayer Details Revealed by Developers

The intention to bring multiplayer features to last year's popular farming simulator RPG, Stardew Valley, was revealed earlier this year but with a lack of any details on how it would be implemented into the game. Hopefully it doesn't experience any delays from here until early 2018, and we'll be able to tie the knot with our buddies ASAP. As explained by the developers, once the multiplayer update is rolled out in 2018, you'll be able to build up to three cabins on your farm.

"A lot of players have requested player-to-player marriage", Chucklefish wrote in a new blog post.

Farmhands can do nearly anything the main player can do.

Farmhands will live in cabins on your farm, be able to farm and mine, fish and forage, and marry your town's NPCs. Player-to-player marriage won't use the mermaid pendant, but rather an alternative method that requires a similar amount of effort to wooing an NPC. Each player will also have their own inventory, with the items in this inventory stored in a chest in their cabin when they are offline. The main player is the one who determines when a day ends via sleeping, when festivals begin, and whether that game will side with the community center or Joja Mart.

You won't need to set up a server to run multiplayer. We're still working out what that will be. The long awaited multiplayer functionality is nearly upon us and will be entering beta on steam at the end of 2017, before coming to all platforms in early 2018. For non-Steam version, the system has yet to be worked out.

Local multiplayer, split-screen and PVP are not planned at this point.

"Effort so far has been focused on overcoming the biggest technical hurdle: synchronising multiple games over the internet", Chucklefish concluded. Retrofitting multiplayer into a game that didn't have it originally is notoriously hard. "Mod authors will be encouraged to update their mods during this beta period". Consoles will be getting the patch too, though, shortly after the PC releases. There's no time frame for when the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the patch will be released, though Chucklefish notes that it will "take a while to roll out to each platform".
