The five-time major victor - who had earlier been denied a place at the French Open - will need a main-draw wildcard if she is to be guaranteed a grand slam return at the US Open next month, but invitations to forthcoming events in Stanford Classic and Cincinnati will enable her to make a case for inclusion at Flushing Meadows.

The Russian defeated her opponent with a score of 6:1, 4:6, 6:0.

Sharapova begins her Stanford campaign with a first-round match against Jennifer Brady on Monday.

In the second round, Sharapova is to meet with seven-seeded Lesya Tsurenko of Ukraine.

Sharapova, who returned to tennis in April after a 15-month ban for testing positive for meldonium, is eligible for US Open qualifying but would need a wild card to be given entry into the main draw. She also participated in the Madrid Open where she lost in the second round, and retired injured from her second round match at the Rome Masters. The tournament is held from July 31 to August 6 at tennis courts of the Stanford University, California.

In a gruelling match, Sharapova dropped a set after blitzing through the first set. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (4) also takes part in the competition, she starts on Wednesday immediately from the second round.

Now ranked at 171 spot, Sharapova will play Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in the second round. "I have quite a long summer ahead of me and a lot of tournaments to compete at, so I'm just happy to get back at it".
