Ford Mustang GT Offers New Quiet Mode Exhaust

The 2018 Mustang GT will add a stealth mode to muffle its exhaust so owners won't disturb the neighbors with the engine's rumble at night.

Foerster didn't get a ticket and he didn't even get mad. Then, when it's less important to be quiet, in the middle of the day, you can set the auto to start in a more rambunctious, Mustang sort of way.

Although not standard, the new Mustang's system isn't dissimilar to the aftermarket system we tried on the modified Sutton CS800 Mustang.

"I love the sound of the V8, but it can be loud, and you can't annoy people like that in your neighborhood", said von Foerster, who now heads Ford's user experience team.

Ford Mustang 2018 will now come with "Quiet Mode" which allows you to reduce the noise of the car's exhaust.

According to von Foerster, while backing a Shelby GT350 Mustang out of his Detroit suburb driveway early one morning, the sound of the car's thundering V-8 engine annoyed one of his neighbors so much that they called the police to complain about it. A study by found that "loud engine revving ranks among the most annoying noises neighbors make, alongside other common nuisances including lawn mowers, power tools, barking dogs and band practice".

"When sounds get up into the upper-70-decibel range, that's typically about when they start to bother people", Matt Flis, Ford's exhaust development engineer, said in the release. With new Quiet Exhaust mode and Quiet Start, Ford is doing its part to keep the peace.

Active valve performance exhaust is one of many changes Mustang fans will see when cars reach showrooms later this year. Ford said quiet start reduces the engine note on ignition to 72 decibels, about the same as a household dishwasher. The Mustang GT's V8 will start, but without that signature - spine-tingling - roar.

In its loudest setting, the Mustang GT's active exhaust lets out more than 80 decibels of unadulterated V-8 fury at startup, about the same as your average garbage disposal.

Other tech that features on the new Mustang included a 12-inch instrument cluster, Magna Ride damping system and SYNC Connect with FordPass.

In the release, Ford said the new Mustang GT reaches 60 mph (miles per hour) in under 4 seconds, marking it as the fastest version of the vehicle ever built.
