The Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office has confirmed the discovery of a decomposed human body inside the rescue boat on display on the lawn of Coast Guard Station Chatham.

Coast Guard personnel notified the Chatham police Sunday night that they had discovered the body in a closed compartment of the boat.

The preliminary investigation has not revealed evidence of foul play.

Town and Massachusetts State Police, Coast Guard Investigative Services and members of the district attorney's office continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the death.

The remains have been sent to the medical examiner in an effort to determine the body's identity.

The remains are believed to be those of Matthew Amsler, a 24-year-old Chatham man who went missing on October 27.

A GoFundMe post claims that Amsler sought shelter from a storm in the boat and ran out of oxygen.
